Some of Asia’s best amateur long-distance triathletes will line up on Lagoi Bay beach in Bintan this Sunday, 25 August, with the aim of securing a slot to the 2020 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championships in Taupo, New Zealand.
The Indonesian edition of the world-class 2019 IRONMAN series will bring over 2000 visitors from 58 nationalities to the island of Bintan, with athletes traveling from 39 countries. Supported by the Indonesia Ministry of Tourism, the event will welcome a record number of international visitors, representing 87% of the participants, versus 82% in 2017 and 86% in 2018.
Not all participants are competing to secure one of the 60 World Championship qualification slots. A large number of them, including the 26% of first timers, will simply aim to complete the grueling 1.9km swim, 90km bike and 21.1km run within the cut-off time of 8 hours 30 minutes.
The race will start at 6am on Sunday as the sun rises over the white sand beach of Plaza Lagoi, the centrepiece of the Lagoi Bay tourism development in Bintan Resorts. The new wave of amateur elite males and females will start first as a group.
Among the race favourites in the female field are Singaporean Choo Ling Er, a three-time Asia Pacific age group champion and Singapore’s IRONMAN record holder, and Australian Jac Crofton who qualified for the IRONMAN World Championship this year for the fourth time. In the male field, battling for the win will be Kiwi’s Brandon Vesty, ex-professional cyclist, and James Shapcott, who holds a personal best of 4 hours 10 minutes over the distance.
Race organiser MetaSport, determined to make the award-winning event even better, has made a few adjustments to further enhance the participants experience. One main change is the rolling swim start, which consists of flagging off the athletes in groups of four every six seconds, replacing the previous mass start. The second enhancement aims to make the run course cooler owing to the presence of refreshing rain showers at regular intervals throughout the course.
Local and international children will have the opportunity to be part of the action by joining the 1.5km IRONKIDS run on Saturday afternoon. “We involve kids as young as possible in the events we organise, to encourage a healthy lifestyle and a sense of achievement”, says MetaSport’s CEO, Nathalie Marquet. This message is emphasised by title sponsor Indofood, returning for the fourth consecutive year. Indofood endorses sport as a means to promote health and fitness, in addition to a balanced diet.
Participants and spectators can look forward to receiving Indomie, Indomilk and Club Water products, the participating brands of the Indofood group, throughout the weekend. Club Water will be served at the drink stations on the course ensuring athletes stay well-hydrated.
